Locking yourself out of home is a common occurrence, and one which needs to be handled in the right manner if you are to end up having an easy time in future. Most people who find themselves locked out of their homes often end up trying to break into the house in a desperate bit to at least get some place to stay. This is especially so if it’s very late, in which case they might think that they don’t have many options in dealing with the problem.

However, one major problem with this is the fact that you are likely to end up doing yourself more harm than good. Some of the things you risk by trying to break down the door include:

Damage to the door itself

Most of the time, trying to force open a door will lead to the door being damaged. How bad this is usually depends on how much force you use, which in turn depends on the quality of the lock you have. If you have a very high end lock, you will need more force to break open the door. Fixing such doors tends to be very expensive. In fact, there are times when you will find that the cost of fixing the door after breaking into the house will be more than you would spend for a night in a hotel. This is especially so for doors that are very sturdily made.

Increased security risk

Breaking open the door will also expose you to a number of security risks that you should try to avoid as much as possible. For instance, once you have broken the door, chances are that you won’t be able to shut it properly until after you have it fixed. If you happened to be a victim of a burglary then, the people doing the burglary would find it very easy to get into the house since the integrity of the front door will have been drastically reduced.

This is also the case if you have the door repaired using low quality skill. In such cases, the door might not hold up as well as it used to in the past due to structural changes in the door and the frame.

Injury to yourself

You are prone to be injured when you try to break into your own house. A good example of this is when you try to kick in your front door, only to end up with a broken foot or toes. This will obviously add to the expense, since you will also have to deal with the medical bills as well.

As you can see, there are many reasons why you should not attempt this when you lose your keys. A good way to go about it is by calling a 24 hour locksmith and then having them come over to fix the door for you or at least remove the current lock and put in place a new one. This takes very little time, and does not expose you to any of the risks above. It’s also potentially cheaper than breaking into your own house and then fixing the damage later.
